Should you invest in smart lights?

Smart lights aren't an entirely new concept but have considerably grown in popularity as the reliance on technology increases. But, are they really worth the hype? We could write the shortest page ever and just respond with ‘yes, you should invest in smart lights’, however, we feel like we should probably give you a little more information than that.

Smart Lighting

We have therefore put together a little info regarding what smart lights are, how they work, why you should have them installed and who can install them. Smart lights can be a great investment, but it’s important to know all their capabilities before you spend the money to ensure they are suitable for your needs.

What are smart lights?

Smart lights are just as their name suggests - 'smart' lighting that has a wi-fi connection which allows extended capabilities, such as voice command, colour changing, dimming and the ability to turn lights on or off at particular times of the day.

How do smart lights work?

The concept of smart lights is quite an easy one to understand - the lighting in your home is connected to the internet and to each other, which allows your lights to be able to do more 'stuff'. For example, you can control your lights through an app from anywhere, by voice command while you are home or via a platform inside your house, which all offer opportunities that aren't offered with traditional lighting.

Why should you invest in smart lights?

It is all good for us to say yes, and have smart lights installed, but why? Why should you spend your cash? Besides being a positive investment in your home, they also:

  • Ease and efficiency when using your lights.
  • Voice command! If you ever wanted to ask your lights to turn off, and they actually do, smart lights are the choice for you.
  • There are so many lighting options available through varying apps, including creating 'scenes' (unique combinations of effects), dimming, grouping lights together, and changing colour schemes.
  • There is a huge range of smart lights currently available on the market, which means there is something for everyone.
  • Smart lighting is known for its durability, offering longer lifespans and more cost-effective lighting solutions.
  • You can control your lighting from wherever you are sitting - your couch, your bed, your kitchen - and not move. Just think, you could be comfortably cosy in bed and realise you forgot to turn a light off. You can turn it off without leaving the comfort of your covers with smart lighting!
  • You are capable of monitoring and controlling your lighting wherever you are, meaning you can turn your lights off (or on) without actually being home or check to see if you left a stray light on as you ran out the door on the way to work. You won't leave a light on ever again, and you can always turn your lights on ready for when you arrive home at night.
  • You can alter the colour of a lot of smart lighting, allowing you to change the ambience (think warmer tones in the evening and brighter options during the day), as well as more drastic changes (like blue or green!).
  • Smart lighting offers complete control over your lighting through a variety of mediums, such as mobile apps, tablets or home-based platforms. This offers ease of use, as well as efficiency and peace of mind.

Benefits for the elderly or those with limited mobility

Smart lights offer a huge range of benefits to all walks of life. You may not have considered it, but smart lights can provide independence to the elderly or those with limited mobility that are unable to do things such as get up to switch a light off. This can provide a real positive aspect to an otherwise frustrating scenario, and offer some confidence when it comes to the little things.
