Is it ok to only have a fuse box?
If your home only has a fuse box we strongly recommend asking your local electrician to upgrade it to a modern switchboard to ensure the electrical safety of your home.
Older-style fuse boxes are not equipped to handle the increased electrical demand of today’s technology. When older-style fuse boxes were initially installed they only really needed to cope with a few electrical appliances such as a fridge, oven, a TV, and the occasional vacuum cleaner and washing machine. Now the electrical systems in our homes need to manage power for dozens of appliances and gadgets around the clock.
Fuse boxes also often don’t contain any electrical safety devices either a safety switch or an up-to-date circuit breaker.
A perfect analogy to compare an old fuse box with a new switchboard would be driving a car without a seatbelt and airbag. You can still do it but it is only a matter of time before an unexpected accident will cause serious injury or fatality. The same goes for fuse boxes, whilst they provide power they lack the safety measures of modern-day switchboards and that reason alone should be enough to organise an upgrade of your fuse box without delay.
