Almost every access control system starts as one door. A controlled door needs four things: a reader or keypad on the approach, a lock that the system can release, a way for the door to report its own state, and the software that decides who gets in. Get those right on the first door and a networked system will take the next twenty on the same platform. We specify each door on its traffic, its egress requirements and what it protects, so a store room, a front entrance and a comms room are treated as the different problems they are. Doors can be monitored as well as controlled: where a site wants it, the door reports its own state so a door held open or one that has not latched properly is picked up rather than discovered later. Monitoring depends on the door hardware and the platform, so we confirm it door by door. This is part of the wider commercial security platform we design and install for Brisbane businesses.
Electronic access control systems differ on two things: how many doors they handle, and where the system is managed from. They are separate questions. A single door can be managed online, and a fifty-door site can be managed from a server in its own comms room.

Modern IP readers and video door stations are networked devices, so a single door is usually managed in a browser or an app rather than at the keypad: add a user, change a code, unlock the door remotely, see who came to it. Our own office front door runs exactly this. What sets the limit is the device itself, which is to say how many doors and users it supports and how far it will integrate with the alarm and the cameras, so the device is chosen for what the site needs rather than for the one door in front of you.
Several doors wired back to a controller and managed from one interface. Every entry is logged, permissions change in real time, users are added or revoked from one screen, and doors can be grouped so a schedule or a lockdown applies across the site at once. The fastest-moving change in access control is biometric. A fingerprint or a face is a credential that cannot be issued, lost, lent or copied, which is why it suits the doors where knowing exactly who came through matters. Suprema’s readers authenticate in a moment, in full sun or low light, and Australians are getting comfortable with them quickly. We run it ourselves. Walk up to our own office door and the intercom recognises your face, releases the electric strike, disarms the alarm system and streams its camera into our camera platform, all from one action at the door. That is the same design work we do on client sites.
We install and wire electric strikes and magnetic locks across Brisbane, specified to suit each door, its traffic and its egress requirements, and delivered as one managed job from specification to a working, monitored door. Every entry is a record, and that makes access control useful well beyond security. The platforms we install support time and attendance reporting from the same events that control the doors: who arrived when, who is on site now, who was in which area. It supports timesheets, contractor tracking and an evacuation list in an emergency, without a separate system to run. Retention and access permissions on that data are set with you at commissioning, so the system holds what your compliance requires.
Access control does not stop at the front door. Gate access control systems handle vehicles on the same platform as the doors, and the credential can be the vehicle itself: ANPR cameras read number plates and open gates, boom gates and carparks for authorised vehicles automatically, including complete car park systems. It helps to split it into two questions. On scale: a single-door system where the reader or door station decides at the door; a multi-door site system with doors wired back to a controller and managed from one interface; an integrated site system running access alongside intrusion detection and cameras on one platform; and a multi-site system with one user database across many buildings. On management: any of those can be managed on the premises or from the cloud, which is a separate decision from how many doors you have.
