Akuvox intercoms run on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), the open standard that IP phone systems use. In practice, that means an Akuvox door station is not locked to its own hardware: it can call an indoor monitor, a smartphone, a desk phone or all three at once, and it connects to other building systems instead of living beside them. It is the difference between an intercom and an intercom platform, and it is why Akuvox suits properties that want their systems working together.
The clearest way to explain what Akuvox can do is the system running at our own office. Walk up to our front door and the Akuvox intercom recognises your face, or takes your PIN if you prefer. It releases the electric strike on the door, disarms the alarm system, and its camera streams into our camera system alongside every other camera on the building: one action at the door, three systems responding. We use it every working day, which is why we quote it with confidence.
Our office setup is not a special build. Akuvox intercoms integrate with alarm systems and camera platforms, and our technicians have the programming experience to build those integrations properly: entry by face or PIN that disarms the alarm as the door opens, intercom video recorded alongside the site’s security cameras, and access events logged with the rest of the building’s access control. An intercom integrated this way makes everyday access seamless.
For apartment buildings running a decades-old intercom, Akuvox’s 2-Wire line makes the upgrade practical: full IP video intercom, app answering included, running over the building’s existing intercom cabling. In older buildings the original two-wire run is often the only cable path into each apartment, and getting new cabling into every unit is what makes intercom upgrades hard. Reusing the existing pair means the building modernises without it, and each resident gets a new monitor on the wall where the old handset was. It is a conversation we are glad to have with body corporates and building managers.
Akuvox’s SmartPlus app puts the front door on your phone: see the caller, talk, and unlock from anywhere. Residents issue virtual keys to visitors and trades with a start and expiry time, and building managers see entry activity across the property. For homes it means the courier never catches you out; for buildings it replaces the key-cutting cycle entirely.
Akuvox’s range runs from the compact E-series video door phones for a single home entry, through the R-series stations with keypad and card reader, to the X-series touchscreen door stations for multi-tenant buildings, with facial recognition, PIN, card and QR entry on an 8-inch screen. Indoor monitors range from compact audio units to Android touchscreens, and the same SmartPlus platform sits behind all of it.
A home Akuvox system is usually one video door station at the front door or gate, an indoor monitor where the household actually is, and SmartPlus on your phones. It pairs naturally with the rest of a home’s security, and sits alongside the other home intercom systems we install.
Multi-tenant is where Akuvox earns its reputation: touchscreen entry panels with per-apartment calling, face and QR entry for residents, delivery PINs, and cloud management that lets a building manager add or remove a tenant in minutes.
