How ANPR works
The camera captures the plate as the vehicle approaches, reads it optically, and checks it against the lists you control: authorised vehicles, staff, contractors, banned vehicles. What happens next is programmed to the site. A recognised staff vehicle raises the boom gate without a card or code. An unknown vehicle after hours logs the plate, timestamps the footage and can raise an alert. Every read is stored with its vision, so the question “was this vehicle on site” is answered in seconds.

Correctly engineered, certified recognition rates run above 99.6 per cent, reading moving traffic across multiple lanes, at night, in weather and against headlight glare. Accuracy is set by camera angle, height, distance and lighting at each read point, which is why every position is specified from a site inspection and commissioned against real traffic. Plate events flow into the site’s VMS, Wisenet WAVE or Milestone XProtect, alongside footage and access records, and a recognised plate can act as an access credential in its own right: the number plate is the key.

What is the difference between LPR and ANPR?
None in practice. ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) is the common term in Australia; LPR (licence plate recognition) is the same technology.
