Choosing a security camera system for your home comes down to one early decision: install it yourself or have it installed professionally. Both routes can protect your property. The right choice depends on the size of your home, the coverage you need and how much of the work you want to own. Here is how the two compare.
What you get with professional installation
A professional installer is licensed and trained to install your system correctly. In Queensland, security equipment installers must hold a security licence, so the work is done to standard (see who can install security systems). The real value sits in the design rather than the mounting. An experienced installer reads your property, spots the areas of risk and positions cameras where they will capture what matters: faces at entries, plates on the driveway, movement at the boundary.
Professionally installed systems also work as part of a wider setup. Your cameras can be integrated with your alarm system so detection and recording work together, and the installer who fitted the system can service and repair it afterwards. Professional installation costs more than a DIY kit. The difference buys design, workmanship and support.
Micron: the professional benchmark
For this comparison we use Micron, one of the professional camera brands Alltronic supplies and installs. Micron’s range covers fixed and vari-focal turret cameras, bullet cameras and pan-tilt-zoom models, with network video recorders that scale from a small home to a large property. Footage records locally to the NVR around the clock, with live view and playback from your phone. Cameras run on power over Ethernet, which keeps cabling minimal and the install neat, and the recorder can be fitted with a backup power supply so the system keeps recording through a blackout. There are no subscriptions. Once the system is installed, the recording is yours outright.
What you get with DIY security cameras
DIY security cameras cost less because you are not paying for labour, and the current kits are genuinely easy to set up. Wireless and wifi cameras give you flexibility in where you place them, and app-guided setup gets most people running within an hour. The trade-offs are placement, power and ongoing costs. Nobody assesses your property’s risk areas but you, wifi and battery cameras need charging and a strong connection, and the most useful features often sit behind a subscription. DIY video surveillance can absolutely do a job. The question is how big a job you are asking it to do.
The two names most people compare are Google Nest and Swann.
Google Nest cameras
Nest suits homes already running Google’s ecosystem. The range is deliberately small: battery-powered cams that work indoors or out, wired indoor models and video doorbells. Without a subscription you get live viewing and roughly three hours of event history, or up to six hours on the newest wired models. Meaningful video history requires Google Home Premium, the subscription formerly called Nest Aware, which extends event history to 30 or 60 days depending on the plan. Nest stores footage in the cloud only. There is no local recorder, so the system leans on your home internet, and a real security record effectively requires the ongoing fee. Nest is a good fit for watching a front door or driveway. As whole-home video surveillance it reaches its limits quickly.
Swann security cameras
Swann, an Australian-founded brand, is the closest DIY gets to a professional-style setup. Its wired DVR and NVR kits record locally to the recorder with no monthly fees, and its 4K NVR systems include smart detection such as person and vehicle alerts. Kits are expandable, so a four-camera system can grow with your needs, and wire-free battery cameras cover spots where cabling is hard. The limits are the ones that come with any DIY security camera installation: the system is only as good as its placement, wired kits mean running cable yourself, and the finish depends on the person holding the drill.
Which is right for you?
A few questions settle most cases:
- Does your home have high eaves or a second storey? Choose professional installation. Installers have the equipment to work safely at height, and cameras mounted properly at height are harder to tamper with.
- Do you only want one camera on the front door or driveway? A battery wifi camera is quick to install and does that job well. A professional system would be more than you need.
- Do you want cameras and an alarm working together? Choose a professional installer, who can set both up as one system.
- Do you want no ongoing fees? Recording locally to an NVR avoids subscriptions. That is standard on professionally installed systems and available in Swann’s wired kits.
